Unit 3

Unit 3: Create a media product.

ASSESSMENT RECORD SHEET.

LO1: Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief

How has my product developed?
Originally my product was a breakfast radio show for Radio City however through feedback I changed my idea as a breakfast show usually has more than one presenter whereas my show only has one. Plus I decided to change to Capital as it is a national radio station which means there is a greater listenership for my show.

Proposal

Name

 Capital with John Molloy

Genre

Music talk morning radio show

Duration

2 hours

Target Audience

My target audience is for those who are going to work or listening while working or at home.
This may also be for those who are waking up late as the show will start at 10:00. I intend to keep
the show engaging for both genders and will mainly be aiming for young to middle aged listeners
as the show will talk about recent social media news and will have recent, popular, songs.

Outline

My radio show is similar to the typical format of a music talk radio show: it will have an hourly news
segment for the Liverpool region and the rest will be intended for the nation as Capital FM is a
nationwide radio station. The show will contain segments for the presenter to talk which will range
in length depending on what is said as well as this it will obviously have music. I intend the show to
have the newest and most popular music as to keep the listener engaged. The radio show every
20-30 minutes will have ads which will be family friendly and appropriate for the time of airing.

Show Breakdown

The show will have one presenter who will inform the listener on recent social media news based
on music and celebrity gossip. There will also be talking about competitions hosted by
Capital- in this case it my radio show, as it is after Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, will carry
on the recent competition of 100k giveaway and revealing hints about the celebrity.
Music will also be key with emphasis on music tracks that are popular with listeners (the target
audience), this can be from the charts or fan favourites from the past decade. Every hour, similar to
every mainstream radio show, there will be a news bulletin which will inform people of local news
which could be politics, crime, events around the city; there will also be information about music-
such as album releases or festivals and their headliners.

Audio Elements

  • Capital jingles.
  • Music.
  • Background music for when the presenter is speaking.
  • Presenter talking.
  • Ads- relevant to the time of airing and the radio station.
  • Sound effects- till/ money sound

Why I chose to do this idea

I originally had the idea of doing a radio breakfast show on Radio City- a Merseyside based radio
station. However, through the development of the idea, there was clear disadvantages to me
choosing that type of radio show so I changed the show to an after Breakfast show- where single
presenter shows are more common- and changed radio stations from Radio City to Capital FM
where there is a bigger listenership. I chose to do this idea as Capital shows are upbeat and
contain lots of music and news about social media (celebrity gossip) something which I personally
enjoy in a radio show. Capital shows can also be listened to after being broadcasted so this means I
have a greater audience for my product as it can be listened to again on the catch section of the
Capital app.

Primary and secondary research

Through my research of radio and the specific genre I intend to make. I've looked at the regulations
and rules which are used in radio- these were on Ofcom. I’ve also explored the format of a radio
show through listening to shows on Capital and Radio City which should give me a better idea of the
structure of my radio show.

Requirements and Resources

This show will require two people for recording- one to voice the news bulletin and one to host the
show. This project will also require recording and editing software which are available through
recording on iPhone and editing software available for free.

Constraints and contingency

This project requires more than one person, so it needs to match the other person’s schedule. I also
need to have permission from the person for them to be on the radio show. In case they back out of
the production I should have a secondary person ready to fill his position within the project. I should
also keep to a schedule for milestones and deadlines to be kept. To make sure the product keeps on
schedule I should also make secondary copies of audio and pre-production files as to keep them
safe in case of corruption.

Legal and Ethical issues

There are legal regulations for radio from Ofcom which show what is right and wrong to air on radio.
On the radio show you need to consider the inclusivity of the radio show- so considering ethnicity,
gender and sexuality. The radio show should also be appropriate for the time it is airing
(pre-watershed) so should be family friendly which means avoiding strong language and avoiding
adult content/ issues.

Budget

This will be a cheap project as recording equipment is readily available through my phone which
should have high quality audio as well as this I intend to use free editing software (Sony Vegas which
is available in sixth form as well as Videopad which is a free editing software).

Marketing and Distributing

I intend my product to be aired on Capital FM after their breakfast show so it will be aired from 10:00.
It will be advertised across the station through radio ads and will also be advertised through other
subsidiary stations of Capital. Breakfast with Roman Kemp has big advertising through posters and
ads online and TV however I don’t expect such a big advertising campaign as breakfast shows
have the biggest audience however there will be a marketing on social media through pop-up ads
and through people talking about it on social media like Twitter and Instagram.

Sample material
10:00 news
(Capital news jingle)
News presenter: From Global newsroom at 10, ofcom the radio and TV regulator could soon be regulating content on social media. It’s expected to be given new powers to monitor what goes on on the likes of Facebook and Twitter- a government announcement is expected this morning. A 23 year old has been charged after a brick was thrown at a police car in Speke last Friday, it hit an officer who had to be taken to hospital for treatment. Ryan Blake from Garston will have to appear in court. Countries are being urged to wake up to the threat of coronavirus, it’s infected over 44,000 people and killed more than a 1000. Meanwhile the chief executive of formula 1 says there’s a significant chance the chinese grand prix will be postponed because of the virus- it's meant to be taking place in Shanghai in April. And half of British adults are apparently taking their mobiles into the toilet with them. 2 in 5 have admitted dropping them down the toilet or sink.

News presenter: Still windy but getting better and brighter with highs of 6 degrees. From Global newsroom for Capital Liverpool.

Justification

Why a morning radio show?
I have chose to produce a morning radio show as it is a time-slot on radio which has one of the biggest listenership only second to Breakfast radio shows (07:00-10:00). It is also a time when single host shows start airing which I intend my show to be. The morning shows have the biggest listenership as people are listening to the radio as they're waking up or commuting to work. I have chosen to do Capital radio as it is a national radio station meaning I have a big demographic across the Uk- this differs from the hourly news bulletin which is specific to the region.

Why a 2 hour show?
I have chosen to do a morning radio show which is 2 hours from 10:00 to 12:00 so I end the morning slot. This unconventional especially for Capital which typically uses 3 hour radio shows so the morning show is from 10:00 to 13:00. However I wanted my show to be in the morning and end in the afternoon as listenership starts to drop around this time from the high levels of breakfast and morning radio.

Why use a jingle?
A jingle is crucial in keeping the attention of the audience though with the Capital FM radio station the jingle stays the same through out the day with the male/ female voice announcing the presenter and news. I will be using the Capital jingle instead of creating my own as the typical jingle for Capital is the same for throughout the

Why the choice of background music?
I have chosen a backing track as it is a key element in radio/ audio products. I have chosen a copyright free track which is upbeat, i intend to have this is the background when the presenter is speaking in the show- at a low volume so the presenter can still be heard. I have chosen this to go along with the amiable/ friendly atmosphere of the radio show. By not having a backing track when the presenter is talking I believe that it would dtract =from the atmosphere of the show as well as change the pace of the show as music will be played since it's on Capital.

LO2: Be able to plan and develop pre-production materials for an original media product to a client brief

Overview
The goal of this project is to make a morning radio show that would be able to be publicly broadcasted on Capital FM. The morning show intent is to inform, promote, entertain and engage the listeners with music, news bulletins, celebrity/music news and competitions. In my show I intend to utilise codes and convention of audio products with the use of a jingle and a high energy/ friendly atmosphere.

Contents
  1. Product plan
  2. Shooting schedule
  3. Hourly news shooting script
  4. Legal and ethical issues
Production plan

During the project plan I used a mind-map to lay out the ideas I had. These ideas met the brief and met the typical codes and conventions of a morning/ breakfast show. However due to me changing the idea from a breakfast show to a morning (after breakfast show) some of the ideas weren't used such as the constant news and traffic updates as the morning show has less of a audience so doesn't need the constant updates instead it uses hourly news bulletins.
My production plan covers the basic outline of my product- this helps further into the project as it provides a quick/ efficient overview as to what should be in my product. The areas covered in my production plan, despite being for a breakfast show, still are important. These features/ areas are crucial for my radio show to attract its intended audience.

Shooting schedule

News script
The news is the only part of the show that is scripted as that requires more research and has a more serious tone whereas the presenter slot features more of the cuff speech and focuses more on light-hearted issues like in the celebrity or music world which still requires researching as to stay up to date. The point of the script is meant to inform the listener of the local and national news however I also wanted to make it seem less formal with the inclusion of some light-hearted news.

Legal and Ethical issues:
It is tricky to adhere to all the legal and ethical regulations for audio. However it is necessary to adhere to them as to prevent offence or legal violations. I have another student on my product so I will need their permission- if they aren't 18 I need to get their parent/ guardian's permission.
There is always a risk when creating a radio show that people could misinterpret what is said or broadcasted- such as gender or racial representation. Especially for my radio show which is intended to be nationwide morning show (which will have listeners from all backgrounds), so it is important that they are represented equally however I have two male voices on my product so it is difficult to fully represent all genders.
Content and language within songs should also be looked at as my radio show will air pre- watershed- this means that all the content within my product should be family friendly meaning no adult language and no clear adult themes. To avoid this I have chosen songs with mainstream popularity (which means that there is less chance of adult themes) and if songs are explicit, I have chosen the clean version of the song which gets rid of swearing so audiences of all ages can listen.
ASA (advertising standards authority) will thoroughly check ads on every media platform. They act under the a contract from ofcom (the regulator of TV, radio and telecommunications). Ofcom and ASA look into complaints and take action against misleading and harmful content so to avoid action being taken I have chosen appropriate language, songs, ads and topics to be aired in the morning.

LO3: Be able to create production materials for an original media product to a client brief

To record my part of the radio show I used my iPhone and airdropped the files onto the editing software, VideoPad, which I downloaded for free off the internet. i had no prior knowledge of the this software so I had to learn as I went along however it was very easy to use.
To keep production costs low I have used copyright free music/ royalty free music with the background music and the ca-ching (money) sound effect. This means I can have professional sounding audio files without infringing copyright laws which I explored in the broadcasting regulations.
I used two other 'vocal actors' in my radio show. In the first draft of my radio show I used Nathan Tweedy as the news spokesperson and then in the final draft this changed to Liam Rimmer- I did this as to see which voice was best for the news and i chose Liam in the final draft of the radio show. I chose to use students in my Digital Media class as to avoid costs (keeping production costs low) and they still produced clear audio using their phones as well.
When making the product I used multiple files from online:
  • Capital jingle
  • Sound effect- money till sound
  • Royalty free background music
  • Music tracks
  • Advertisements

How I met the codes and conventions of a morning radio show
When working towards my final product i made sure to apply the codes and conventions into my product. The codes and conventions of my product parallel products that are similar of nature. These codes and conventions include:
  • Background music
I have used royalty/ copyright free music for my background music when I am talking in my product as avoid infringing copyright laws. The background music highlights the upbeat nature of my product; the background music has low volume as so you can hear me speak during the presenting part of the radio show.
  • Jingle
I didn't create a jingle for my product as to meet the codes and conventions of a Capital FM radio show. The jingle of that station remains the same throughout the day so as to keep my product as real as possible. I believe through using the capital jingle instead of my own I have created a product which could believably be on the station. Also the jingle is iconic to the station which means that audiences recognise what station it is from- this in turn could increase my listenership.
  • Narration (presenting)
The narration part of my product is done by me (as the show presenter), I discuss music and celebrity news and act as an anchor for the show. I also have used a secondary voice, Liam Rimmer, for the news presenter. Narration is key in creating an engaging and informative show.
  • Ads
I have used ads that are suitable on radio; I have done this as to make the radio show as real as possible. Adas are a staple of Capital FM as it is a radio station that relies on adsense unlike radio stations such as the BBC which uses the money from the TV licence. I have chosen these adverts as they are suitable for my intended listenership and the time I have decided to broadcast my show. Ads that advertise: food, banking, supermarkets, phone companies, the army, etc... The ads are feature about every 20 minutes creating a separation between narration and music.
  • Music
I have used music that features on the current charts and songs that are popular with a younger to middle aged as to interest and engage my target audience. Using these types of songs is also a convention of the Capital radio station which is a modern and popular brand so uses music o the same nature. I have also used popular and well known tracks as to interest any other audiences which mighty be skipping through radio stations- possibly increasing my listenership. Also to go along with broadcasting regulations I have chosen clean versions of songs (avoiding swear words and adult content) as I intend for my product to be aired pre- watershed (10:00- 12:00).
  • Tone
For my product I wanted the overall tone to be friendly and upbeat; to do this I have used high tempo background music and upbeat narration instead of a monotone voiceover which could be associated with presenting the news. I also wanted to make the show have an amiable nature as to make the product accessible for all audiences and a good start to the morning.

LO4: Be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief

MY PRODUCT -1 HOUR CLIP OF RADIO SHOW

Post-production:

I used an editing software called VideoPad which is available for free download on Mac fro the internet. I have no prior experience of this software however this was very easy to navigate and use.
In the image you can see that I have created three audio tracks: one for the main audio ( narration, jingle, ads and music), one for the background music for when narration is happening and one for the sound effect- till sound effect for when I mention the prize of £100k.
I have cleared the video tracks so that they aren't visible in the final edit of my show- radio shows are an audio product therefore don't require visuals. In the second and third audio track ( background music and sound effect) I have lowered the volume level, this is so you can hear the narration clearly.
I've made repeated use of my jingle as to ingrain Capital into the listeners head which would increase brand awareness and interest for the listeners.
I have chosen my product to be an mp4 file which gives the audio a clear and high quality. Plus I don't need to worry about file compression effecting the quality of the file if I upload it YouTube.

How my product meets the brief

Overview
To match the client brief my audio product had to match the requirements posed some being unique for an audio product. To meet the requirements posed by the client brief, the products needs to: convey a suitable message, be appropriate for all audiences (as it going to be aired pre-watershed), it also must meet the codes and conventions of a typical morning radio show plus it must sound appealing.

How does my product convey a suitable tone
My product is a morning radio show which is one of the biggest slots in radio. It is difficult to meet all the codes and conventions as it is purely audio.
I did this through speech. The voice for the news is more serious which helps with the seriousness and formality of the news and topics discussed. This was also the only part hat was fully scripted as itv required the most research. The voice for the host of the show is more upbeat and discusses more light hearted topics. The speech sections are short which is a convention of music radio.
I also used a fast tempo (upbeat) backing track which carries throughout the show keeping the fast paced nature of the show from thew music to the ads and then to the presenting.

How does my product meet the expectations of a morning radio show
My product meets the expectations of a morning radio show- typical of mainstream morning shows on music radio stations such as Capital, Radio City and BBC. There are certain conventions that are needed of a morning radio show.
A jingle is expected for a radio show: I've used the Capital jingle is I intend for my product to be  aired and broadcasted on this station. Plus I've used the typical Capital jingle as the station uses this jingle throughout the day- so all the shows come under the capital brand. This jingle is well known so audiences should recognise it and be interested in what my product is.
The voiceover for the news doesn't have background music which is used to convey the serious/ more formal tone that the news has. This separates it from the rest of the show as the rest of the show involves music for the light hearted and upbeat nature of the show. This makes the news stand out to highlight its importance. The voice comes in for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes, this is typical of the morning radio show. They act as quick and amiable anchorage for the show to engage and inform the audience. For example in my show, in my narrative I have mentioned celebrity news- Ariana Grande on Instagram- and also the competition from the breakfast show which is done as to engage the audience but also to keep their attention.
I have used a lot of music which is expected of a morning radio show: this is so audiences can listen without putting all their attention into listening. They can have it on a background sound for when they are in their house or when they are going to work.
